A manufacturer flying blind
SMTD runs a fleet of industrial machines whose performance directly drives profitability. Every hour of unanticipated downtime is an hour of lost production.
Before the project, performance was observed after the fact, on consolidated reports. Adjustment decisions therefore always lagged the events that caused them.
Making machines talk that never had
The fleet mixes machines of different ages and manufacturers, with heterogeneous protocols. Querying them consistently meant normalising signals that had nothing in common.
There was also a frequency constraint: a production indicator is only worth having if it is available during the shift, not the next morning.
A collection layer, then real-time steering
We built a collection layer that normalises machine signals, then a dashboard that reports performance continuously and surfaces deviations as they happen.

Machines are queried through an abstraction layer that unifies heterogeneous protocols, so adding equipment does not mean rethinking the chain.
Real-time dashboard
Performance is reported continuously during the shift, with deviations highlighted. Adjustments are decided on live data rather than yesterday’s report.
Per-machine yield indicators
Yield is computed machine by machine, which identifies the genuinely limiting equipment instead of reasoning on a workshop average.
History and analysis
Readings are retained to compare periods and evidence gains, beyond instantaneous supervision alone.
The technologies we chose
A Node.js collection layer to query and normalise the fleet, a React interface for real-time reporting, and a historised store for trend analysis.
