Selling a product the customer cannot see yet

Gobelets.com sells customisable drinkware: the product being sold is not held in stock, it comes into being through the customer’s configuration.

On this kind of purchase, visual uncertainty is the main brake on ordering. An approximate preview gets paid for either in abandoned carts or in returns.

The challenge

Faithful rendering, in the browser, without lag

Displaying a textured 3D object in real time in a browser imposes a tight performance budget: rendering has to stay fluid while the user manipulates their artwork, including on modest machines.

The render also had to stay faithful to the actual print — material, curvature, how artwork distorts on a tapered vessel — or it would promise something other than what ships.

The solution

A real-time 3D engine inside the purchase funnel

We built a configurator where personalisation applies directly to a manipulable 3D model, embedded in the purchase journey rather than presented as a separate tool.

Real-time 3D rendering

Artwork is applied to a 3D model the user can rotate, with rendering that stays fluid throughout the manipulation.

Faithful distortion on tapered vessels

Artwork is projected accounting for the product’s real geometry, so the preview matches the printed result rather than a flat thumbnail.

Multiple combinations

Shapes, capacities, colours and print areas combine freely, with the preview recomputed on every change.

Wired into checkout

The approved configuration passes straight to the order, with no rework between creation and purchase.
